Presented by CATTS Online Speech and Language Therapist, Imogen Lyons talks to parents and educators about Otitis Media with Effusion (Commonly known as Middle Ear Infection or Glue Ear) and its impact on Speech and Language Development.

Otitis media causes a build up of fluid in the middle ear. This fluid build up is sometimes associated with redness, swelling and ear pain in young children. Anyone can develop a middle ear infection however infants between between 18 months and 5 years of age are most at risk.

Anyone can develop a middle ear infection but infants between 6 and 15 months old are most commonly affected.

It’s estimated that 1 in 3 children experience at least one middle ear infection by the time they’re 8 years old.

This talk covers what signs to watch out for in your child, it’s impact on speech and language development, and what treatments are usually recommended.

As with all early childhood ailments, the earlier the parent can notice and bring to the attention of their GP, the better the outcome for the child.
